Hari Raya Haji
The second most celebrated by Muslims is Hari Raya Haji, or Hari Raya Korban, or festival of the pilgrimage. It is celebrated about 2 months after Hari Raya. It marks the end of the haj pilgrimage period from where comes the name.
Haj is a requirement in Islam and as long as one has the means and are in a sound and healthy state, he or she will make the journey to the Holy Land of Mecca.
The festival commemorates the sacrifice made by prophet Abraham, who was asked to offer his only son up for sacrifice (korban means sacrifice). Although he was fulfilled with great grieve he prepared himself to perform the task. However God stopped him and revealed that this was a test, and instead of his son a ram was sacrificed. Therefore, sacrifice of animals is performed. The animals are slain according to the religious rites, so as to minimise mishandling to the animal. This is what the word halal stands for. The meat is then distributed, with special attention to the needy and poor.
The celebration includes visiting of relatives and friends similarly to Hari Raya, or entertaining guests at home.
