Singapore
Culture / Traditions
Singapore is an amalgamation of mainly Chinese, Malay, Indians and recently of increasing number of caucasian immigrants settled in permanently or for considerable period. Hence the culture and the customs of the nation reflects the diversity among the population in their practices and ethnic identity. Together with its modern outfit and infrastructure it forms a cosmopolitan society where people live harmoniously with a strong national identity.
The three ethnic races are Chinese, Malay and Indian which carry and preserve their own unique traditions and lifestyle. All of them have their own individual religion with which are related all the colorful festivals through the year which are enjoined by the whole population.
There are four official languages of Singapore. These are Mandarin, Malay, Tamil and English. However English is used everywhere and becomes the colloquial language in the modern families. It also unites the different ethnic groups. Children are taught in English. However in an effort to preserve their ethnic identity they are obliged to learn their native language or mother tongue. A local dialect of English is often used between the Singapreans called Singlish. Singlish is a mix of English with other languages mixed into the English.
